Dambusters
October 22, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Presented by Ted Barris, author of Dambusters
It was a night that changed the Second World War.
On May 16, 1943 nineteen Lancaster bombers carrying many Canadian air crews took off on a night sortie flying at tree-top level to the Ruhr River inside Germany to release specialized bombs against the hydroelectric dams.
The raiders breached two dams and damaged a third which devastated enemy power plants, factories and infrastructure one hundred miles downstream.
Of the nineteen outbound bombers eight did not return at a loss of fifty-three airmen including fourteen Canadians.
