SUMMARY:Scarborough Archives & Historical Collection
DESCRIPTION:While the Society’s archives primarily contain paper records\, documents and photographs relating to the history of the Scarborough\, there are also many three dimensional artifacts that make up part of the “Historical Collection” and add to our knowledge of our community’s heritage. Some are unusual or rare\, one-of-a kind objects\, and others add to the story behind the paper records\, photographs or the documents in our collection. Some objects are large and heavy\, some ceramic\, wooden\, metal\, glass or stone. In some cases they reflect on the life of the donor\, others had a specific purpose no longer relevant in our modern society.\n \nSince we can’t haul them to the program meeting\, pictures will have to do. Please join us for a power-point presentation on the history behind many of the historic objects\, their donor\, and their relationship to Scarborough’s history.\nSpeaker: Rick Schofield\, Archivist

SUMMARY:Program for January 24\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Following a short Annual General Meeting\, our program will feature the History of the Society since 1956. \nMore than sixty-five years ago\, in 1956\, a small group of Scarborough citizens led by the Reeve of Scarborough\, gathered together to initiate the founding of the Scarborough Historical Society. Monthly meetings of 10-15 people met quarterly to listen to presentations provided by guest speakers. \nSince then\, the Society’s membership grew to almost 500 during Scarborough’s Bicentennial year when interest in our history peaked. Programs were held in the meeting room of Bendale Library. Various new activities such as: displays at the Scarborough Town Centre\, preservation of heritage buildings\, the establishment of the museum in Thomson Park\, the publishing of hundreds of newsletters plus several booklets and the establishment of an Archives and Research Centre will be featured in a power point presentation. \nJoin other Society members and guests as we look back on our many accomplishments.

SUMMARY:Battle of the Atlantic
DESCRIPTION:The Battle of the Atlantic\, Canada’s longest continuous military engagement of the Second World War\, lasted 2\,074 days\, claiming the lives of more than 4\,000 men and women in the Royal Canadian Navy\, the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Merchant Navy. The battle began on the opening day of the war in September 1939 and ended almost six years later with Germany’s surrender in May 1945. Canada’s role was primarily escort duty for the hundreds of convoys that gathered in Halifax and Sydney\, Nova Scotia\, for the treacherous journey across the Atlantic. Other Canadian ports\, as well as the port of St. John’s\, Newfoundland\, harboured naval and merchant vessels that joined the convoys. \nJoin Ted Barris as he returns to our regular Society meeting for his new program on the “Battle of the Atlantic”. This is final 2022 Society program at Bendale Library and starts at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday\, November 22th. \nTed will have his book available for those who wish to obtain their own copy.
