SUMMARY:Battle of the Atlantic
DESCRIPTION:The Battle of the Atlantic\, Canada’s longest continuous military engagement of the Second World War\, lasted 2\,074 days\, claiming the lives of more than 4\,000 men and women in the Royal Canadian Navy\, the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Merchant Navy. The battle began on the opening day of the war in September 1939 and ended almost six years later with Germany’s surrender in May 1945. Canada’s role was primarily escort duty for the hundreds of convoys that gathered in Halifax and Sydney\, Nova Scotia\, for the treacherous journey across the Atlantic. Other Canadian ports\, as well as the port of St. John’s\, Newfoundland\, harboured naval and merchant vessels that joined the convoys. \nJoin Ted Barris as he returns to our regular Society meeting for his new program on the “Battle of the Atlantic”. This is final 2022 Society program at Bendale Library and starts at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday\, November 22th. \nTed will have his book available for those who wish to obtain their own copy.
