The Scarborough Historical Society has managed the Bethel Pioneer Cemetery through a volunteer Board of Trustees since 1993, maintaining the grounds and records and managing interments.
A memorial arch was erected as a centennial project in 1967.
Bethel is a historic cemetery located on Lot 28, Concession C in Scarborough (the east side of Kennedy Road just south of Eglinton Avenue East.) Originally, the property was donated by Thomas Walton to the congregation of Bethel Primitive Methodist Church in the year 1841. Construction of a church began that year and was completed in 1842, although the deed for the land was not registered to Joseph Sewell and others as trustees for the Primitive Methodist Church until 1855. The church closed about 1890 and the congregation moved to Scarborough Junction.
The cemetery continued to operate and became the final resting place for many Scarborough pioneers and settlers of all denominations.
Plots are still available in this lovely historic setting.
