World War I

World War I Scarborough, Ontario, Canada Commemoration Project

This is an ongoing joint-research project of the Scarborough Historical Society, the City of Toronto, Museums and Heritage Services, and the Scarborough Museum.    The impact of the war was significant both in terms of Scarborough’s involvement in the conflict as well as how the conflict affected residents in service and the loved ones that supported them.

As Scarborough is a very large geographic area, many that enlisted used smaller community or local post office names to indicate location for residence on official attestation papers and other documents. Scarborough residents often identified as being from Ellesmere, Scarboro Junction, Agincourt, L’Amoreaux, or one of the other crossroads communities found within Scarborough’s borders. This project has been created to bring together and document those who served, enlisted, or were conscripted from Scarborough and provide a place for commemoration of the Scarborough Great War experience.

This research has brought with it some amazing stories of service and commemoration. View our collection of “Featured Veterans” that shares some of the fascinating stories that the Scarborough Great War experience brought to light. We hope that you enjoy these stories, and if you would like more information, or would like to contribute to the project, please contact us at info@scarboroughhistorical.ca.

Scarborough WWI Pinmap   Updated Version Coming Soon!

The map points indicate where enlisted or conscripted recruitment records show that candidates were born, listed next of kin, or resided in Scarborough. It also includes map points for veterans who settled here post war where that information is available. Each point can be opened to find more information on the named person. For each person listed we continue to research and add information to their file.  Some records are currently complete while others are still at the name only stage. Pages are being created for each name that will be posted and made accessible as the project continues.
