The Scarborough Historic Sites Committee meets to review historical sites of interest in the Community of Scarborough, Ontario and commemorate them in numerous ways.

The Scarborough Historic Sites Committee members work together with City of Toronto appointed citizens of the Scarborough Preservation Panel.

The primary responsibility of the Scarborough Historic Sites Committee is to recommend historical sites within Scarborough to be highlighted with either a historical plaque or site marker, or both if deemed necessary.

The Scarborough Historic Sites Committee also manages the actual installation of plaques and markers, and takes part in the special dedication ceremonies when they are installed on walls or monuments.

Throughout the existence of the Scarborough Historical Society, our members have been instrumental in recommending and installing markers and plaques. Now there are over 50 plaques, and more than 30 site markers displaying our local heritage to the public.

Of particular note is the participation of the Reverend Robert Bonis, who served on the City of Scarborough’s Local Architectural Advisory Committee (L.A.C.A.C.) and the old Sites Committee from 1974 until 1990. Using his skill as a writer, Bonis drafted the inscriptions for more than twenty-five of the original bronze plaques which were erected at various historic sites in Scarborough.

Cast resin ‘Site Markers’, coloured green and gold, are provided free of charge to the owner of a recommended Scarborough Heritage site.

Bronze Plaques are provided by the Society, but as a joint financial effort between the Society and the site owner.

Regular Scarborough Historic Sites Committee meetings are held at the Scarborough Archives.
