A History of Scarborough - Edited by Robert R. Bonis.

"This History of Scarborough is itself the product of our Township's history, the result of research and writing by many interested persons over many years. The first History of Scarborough appeared in 1896, the one hundredth anniversary of the settlement of the Township. It was published by the Centennial Executive Committee and edited by David Boyle, Curator of the Ontario Archaeological Museum.
As the years passed, the decrease in the number of available copies, the new and more exciting history made by the remarkable development of the Township, and an increasing demand for information on local history proved that something new was needed.

In 1956 interest in local history resulted in the organization of the Scarborough Historical Society. The Society printed a seven page "Brief Outline of Scarborough's History" based on Boyle's book. To meet the requests of teachers and pupils of local schools for local history, Mrs. Roberta Gilbank, Chief Librarian of the Scarborough Public Library and Secretary of the Scarborough Historical Society, printed and circulated the historical notes prepared by other members of the Society and compiled numerous sheets of information based on Boyle's book supplemented by more recent data.

In 1959 Mr. Robert Bonis wrote an account of the Birth of Scarborough for publication in a brochure distributed at the time of the visit by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth to the Township. More recently, Mrs. Gilbank organized the collection of contributions from many sources. Among these was new material written by Mr. Bonis and illustrated by line drawings of Mr. David I. Adolphus. Mr. Bonis has edited this material and the present History of Scarborough is the result.

The contributors to this history are too numerous to mention. We hope it is sufficiently valuable to make them proud to have contributed."
